GOLDEN PHEASANTChrysolophus pictus©catlovers
The Golden Pheasant or “Chinese Pheasant” is native to forests in mountainous areas of western China but feral populations have been established in the United Kingdom and elsewhere.
The adult male is 90–105 cm in length, its tail accounting for two-thirds of the total length. It is unmistakable with its golden crest and rump and bright red body. The deep orange “cape” can be spread in display, appearing as an alternating black and orange fan that covers all of the face except its bright yellow eye, with a pinpoint black pupil.
Despite the male’s showy appearance, these hardy birds are very difficult to see in their natural habitat. Consequently, little is known of their behavior in the wild.
They feed on the ground on grain, leaves and invertebrates, but roost in trees at night. While they can fly, they prefer to run: but if startled they can suddenly burst upwards at great speed, with a distinctive wing sound.
Although they can fly in short bursts they are quite clumsy in flight and spend most of their time on the ground. Golden Pheasants lay 8-12 eggs at a time and will then incubate these for around 22–23 days. They tend to eat berries, grubs, seeds and other types of vegetation.

CRESTED WOOD PARTRIDGE (Male)Rollulus rouloul©Dave2X / Dave Irving
This small partridge is a resident breeder in lowland rainforests in south Burma, south Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo. Its nest is a ground scrape lined with leaves, which is concealed under a heap of leaf litter. Five or six white eggs are incubated for 18 days.
Unusually for a galliform species, the young are fed bill-to-bill by both parents instead of pecking from the ground, and although precocial, they roost in the nest while small.
Crested Wood Partridge is a rotund short-tailed bird, 25cm in length, with the male marginally larger than the female. Both sexes have a scarlet patch of bare skin around the eye and red legs without a spur or hind toe.
The Crested Wood Partridge is usually seen singly or in pairs as it forages on the ground for fruit, seeds and invertebrates. When disturbed, it prefers to run but if necessary it flies a short distance on its rounded wings.

NORTHERN ROYAL FLYCATCHER (Onychorhynchus coronatus mexicanus)
by Aves Internacionales
The Northern Royal Flycatcher is a species of bird in the Tyrannidae family. It is found in Mexico, south through most of Central America, to north-western Colombia and far western Venezuela. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.
The Northern Royal Flycatcher is 16.5–18 cm (6½-7”) long, brown above small buffy spots on its wing-coverts; the rump and tail are tawny-ochraceous in colour. The bill is long and broad.
The Royal Flycatcher has an erectile fan-shaped crest, coloured red in the male and yellow-orange in the female. The display with the crest fully raised is seen extremely rarely, except during banding sessions.
The Northern Royal Flycatcher is usually inconspicuous and quiet, but sometimes gives a repeated sharp clear pree-o or key-up.
